Gregory Peck’s love interest in this drama about antisemitism is a Vassar graduate from an upper-crust Protestant New York family who through the course of the movie has trouble reconciling the prejudice she didn’t fully know she had. One of the earliest and best illustrations of Vassar women being presented as typically wealthy and elegant, well-bred, intelligent, and typically quite proper and demure—a mode found frequently in this collection.
